Wanderlust Home and Pet Care
Driving North to Quimper
June 19 We drove out of the way to the Island of Re. I selected the village of Saint Martin en Re to have lunch. We sat outside - Yeah it wasn’t raining - and enjoyed the watching the many tourists who were also taking advantage of the good weather. We arrived at David and Hazel’s home. Based on previous conversations and invitation, I assumed David and Hazel ran a B&B so I requested a room to rent. I was completely wrong in my assumption. David and Hazel had a good laugh. We enjoyed meeting everyone (including the dogs we will house sit) and getting to know the house and grounds.
June 20 Drove about 2.5 hours to our first stop in the Loire Valley, The Chevernay Chateaux. The home has been owned by the same family for over 6 generations except for 2 unrelated owners. How amazing is that and they live in a portion of the chateaux. It was initially built by the Minster of Finance to the King of France. We then drove to the famous Chateaux Chambord, King Franciose 1st hunting lodge. The king would bring 1500 people with him and those people needed a place to stay as well. Think about the supplies needed to feed and cloth all those people. OMG.
June 21 Drove through the foggy countryside to Chenonceau Chateaux, a beautiful castle owned by two powerful women, Diane de Poitiers (the concubine) and Catherine de Medici (the wife). This is an more intimate castle with two lovely gardens. We had a gourmet lunch which included a large selection of cheese brought to the table on a cart. I chose 4 cheese and Gary chose 4 cheeses and we shared with each other. One was like a warm ice cream, it just melted in my mouth. The afternoon was spent at the Leonardo de Vinci museum in Amboise.
